Why I Sarcastically Appreciate Westboro Baptist Church

This title no doubt has grabbed your attention. I do not condone nor think what they do is good for the world, in fact I believe the opposite. The WBC is nothing more than a slanderous hate group. Why then have I said that I appreciate them? Simply put it’s because what they do is exactly what is transcribed in the Bible. Their pickets, signs and actions all are acceptable within Biblical terms. They preach positively for the deaths of soldier’s, abortion clinics being bombed, gays being murdered and non believers being killed, maimed or humiliated. The Westboro Baptist Church is truly a group of sick f–ks the likes of which we haven’t seen front and center since the Klan during it’s height of power.

The real reason I appreciate WBC is simply because through their willful ignorance and disturbing actions they reaffirm my lack of faith in religious institution. Remember that these people are given tax exemption status from the United States government, so like it or not they are truly considered a legitimate sect of Christianity.

Look at the Bible itself though. Is it really any less hateful? Spiteful even? No, it is at the cusp of degenerate actions portrayed by the WBC itself short of slaying those they are protesting against and the only reason they don’t do such a thing is because they would be disbanded as an organization and lose their income as well as tax exemption status. They stay relevant because they offend so many people, even Christians. Most Christians are not bad people nor do they generally condone these actions even if they view something like homosexuality as immoral or against God. They live and let live or just personally bitch about it, but go on with their lives. The WBC though is an organization that takes the Bible word for word literally and rolls with it. They interpret the words and passages as they see fit just like anyone else. So let’s look at some passages.

“Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.”
Hosea 13:16

With reading this, thinking like a fanatical WBC follower, you can understand their view of those who go against what they perceive to be God’s will. They have been taught that if you turn from God’s teachings you should be banished to hell and sentenced to death and eternal damnation. Hosea 13:16 essentially offers this belief up to them on a platter.

“Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:
And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.”
Deuteronomy 12:2-3

For the record Deuteronomy is a very violent book. Again reading as a WBC follower this is basically telling you to kill and destroy with literally no regard (it states to burn basically everything) for anyone’s safety. When they protest a dead soldier’s funeral maybe that is their way of burning the grave with spiritual fire? They really view everyone else as heretics who are wrong and who worship a false version of the Christian God and this passage only reinforces their piety.

“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.” Leviticus 20:13

This seems pretty straight forward and is the most widely used verse to explain how homosexuality is evil and wrong. The WBC are only pointing out that they need to kill these gays in order to appease God because God hates gays… or wait is an omnipotent being suppose to hate?… I can’t remember considering how many interpretations there are of this book.

Ok this next one is a bit lengthy, but important.

“When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them.” Deuteronomy 7:1-2

Reading this word for word shows that the LORD wants you to destroy the absolute f–k out of anyone who doesn’t worship him or deem him the one and only godlike being. The WBC is doing nothing more than interpreting this as literally as possible. They want to destroy all Muslims because according to this that is acceptable. Same with homosexuals, feminists and the like.

The whole point is that what the Westboro Baptist Church does with it’s parading of hate signs and disturbing propaganda, is nothing more than what a majority of the Bible preaches. When was the last time you really, and I mean REALLY read the Bible front to back? It is a sadistic, spiteful, sexually deviant, perverse and murderous book. No other book can hold a flame to it’s absolute disregard for human life or respect for anyone of difference. A majority, in my opinion, of Christians and Catholics have never read the Bible any more than what their priest or pastor reads to them. They take these select quotes to explain how their agenda is correct and how questioning God is a no-no.

Without logical reason and without the ability to question the Bible we leave it to interpretation. Then after it is interpreted, if it goes against the norm then it is pushed off as a heretical and overly fanatical group. This is what Westboro has been accused of by Christianity as a whole. Why is Westboro a fanatical hate group? Because they preach violence, hate, disdain and shedding blood of those who are different. What does Christianity preach that is different?

Basically you have Westboro that treats the Bible like a Splinter Cell novel lavish with descriptions of righteous killing, tolerating nothing different, doing it all in the name of and for God as HE wills it. Then you have the majority of Christianity that makes the Bible into a coloring book. The story of Sodom and Gomorrah made into a simple 4 page long colorfest for kids to use without understanding that both these cities are essentially Las Vegas and New York City being annihilated by a pissed off god because these people gave into their natural inhibitions that he gave us the apparent free will to choose to give into or not.

In the end is Westboro really that far off? Are they really just a giant band of psycho over zealous bigots who misread the Bible the same way that politicians are seemingly too often misquoted? I can tell you I have read the Bible, I have attended Sunday school before, I have been subjected to religious intolerance, persecution and deception and Westboro is a beacon of reality. I give Westboro one thing that the Vatican as well as Christians are unwilling to admit or understand. The Bible is a vicious violent book that preaches the destruction of all that is against it and its god. The Bible is a terrifying example of how inhuman we were as a culture in that time period, and the quicker we accept that this book is a book that is not all flowers, puppies and happiness, the quicker we can attempt to weed out groups like Westboro. Because Westboro is just like a lot of Christian organizations, except they wear their hate on the outside. Give them credit for being upfront and honest about their ignorance and bigotry.

One comment on “Why I Sarcastically Appreciate Westboro Baptist Church

  1. If you stop thinking of “God” as some sort of person and instead take “God” to be the abstract (imperfect) force that binds and propagates all life, then “sin” is not the subject of any sort of magical holy judgment. It is simply self-destruction. Anyone who distances him/herself from the life force naturally destroys him/herself just as anyone who stops eating food would physically starve him/herself (and die).

“God” neither saves nor destroys you. If you choose to live a healthy lifestyle (both physically and spiritually), then you save yourself. If you choose to live an unhealthy lifestyle (either physically or spiritually), then you destroy yourself.

(Of course, there is the question of what exactly “God” wants, and I don’t think the Bible necessarily has all the answers on that.)
