So Hobby Lobby, a large chain store, is doing whatever it can to avoid paying health insurance costs to cover their full time staff. They are being fined by the feds to the tune of $1.8 million a day. They claim it is because they are deeply religious and allowing women to use birth control is against THEIR beliefs. Hmmm… ok I understand your reservation, but the issue I am having with Hobby Lobby, alongside many different religious institutions that employ people, is that while yes you have your right to freedom OF religion, we as citizens, have a right to freedom FROM religion.
My personal guess is that not everyone is an evangelical christian that is employed by Hobby Lobby. In fact, I bet a few of them are atheists and agnostics. My personal belief is that they have a different value system than you, but because you own the operation that you work for you and only you, get to decide what THEY need right? No. That is not how it works. Yes, you can model your business however you want, but what you cannot do is alienate your employees because its what you like or what your comfort level is. That’s what was done in the 40s, 50s and 60s to blacks, because racist store owners didn’t want to hire them due to racism. That was a preference back then and this to me, is similar, different, but similar.
There are many things employees at companies have to deal with because of the preference of ownership and management. Many places will not let you have a beard, but you can have a mustache. You cannot have certain piercings or tattoo’s showing at another job. You are forced to constantly walk up to customers and ask if they need help, despite most customers hating that.
The biggest problem is that those who own a business seem to be the only ones allowed to have a voice. I’m still waiting for one of these business owners to send a card to all their employees with a simple question of, “Do you want us to offer standardized healthcare that includes the option contraception?” to which I can assume an overwhelming percentage of their staff would say simply yes. Because it is humane. Reducing your employees hours to the point of avoiding the law is both hilarious and depressing all at once. These places claim to have their employees interests, yet do exactly the opposite of what a vast majority of their employees want and/or need.
The religious excuse perturbs me. Oh you’re christian? That’s fantastic, but I am not so your moral rules do not apply to me, I have my own and holy shit, what do you know, my heathen self has damn near the same moral outlook, but without the need for a book to explain it to me. I’m not trying to slam religion or those who follow any of the many in the world, I just get tired of it being used as a weapon and as a reason behind stupid money driven reasoning.
Freedom is both for and against religion and that gets lost in translation, or manipulation in reality. Sadly Hobby Lobby and other places will use their religious belief to make an excuse against the health care bill. It makes me wonder if they ever read the parts of the Bible that told them how to deal with the poor and needy…
Deuteronomy 15:7, 11
If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.
Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns
When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your God.
One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.
He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.
Well… seems like this God fellow is a Capitalist hating, Socialist loving Progressive right?
